May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. What started as a weeklong proclamation in 1979 has become a month of remembering, honoring, and celebrating the rich culture and history of these communities. In this course, you’ll get a quick overview of AAPI history in the United States. You’ll also learn what the term “AAPI” means—and see why some people prefer other terms. Then, you’ll explore ways to honor this month, including learning about AAPI contributions in STEM, the arts, politics and community, and sports. Remember, the relevance of this history goes beyond a single month or course. What you learn here can help you gain a better, more nuanced understanding of the people and cultures around you.
